Analysis of Dying Light: The Following – Enhanced Edition

Techland surprising early last year introduce Dying Light, a game that while not invented anything and returning to dive into yet another zombie apocalypse, it knew very well play all its cards to offer a fun product with personality and with lots to do.

Since its launch, the title has received constant support from the company, adding options, solving problems, including more content (both free and paid), demonstrating the commitment of the study with the game. But now is when we get all of them (Be the Zombie, Cuisine & Cargo, Ultimate Survivor Bundle and The Bozak Horde) in a unique and appealing editing both physical and digital, which also includes the most interesting content: The Following, an expansion that puts an end to its history and with which we enjoy a handful of additional hours. As for the game itself and we devote a thorough analysis at the time, here we will focus mainly on this new adventure.

The Following

Not to go into too much detail about what happened at the end of the main quest, simply we say that our hero is forced to leave town to investigate strange rumors that talk about the existence of a sect whose members are completely immune to the virus that is turning everyone into zombies. Thus, we will play to explore a new map large (equivalent in size to anything seen in the original game) located on the outskirts of Harran, an innovation that becomes the central axis around which all other.

The Following no longer an expansion, and as such remains intact playable formula Dying Light, so in a sense we find what might be called a “more of the same”. That is, an action adventure first-person open world with many touches of RPG and which will allow us to implement all kinds of movements of parkour to climb almost anything to see.

Infected classes are the same, the use of arms has hardly changed, the controls are identical, the mechanics of day and night makes the undead become much more dangerous when the sun sets well again present, the crafting system repeats its important role in process of fabricating objects with materials found, and so on.

However, The Following knows to provide fair novelties like to make the experience feel slightly different and relatively fresh, although the sensations transmitted at the end are almost the same. Input we design own map, changing a city full of high-rise buildings by long stretches of field, which has made the parkour lose much importance. Mind you, this is still present and there are many times when we will force to implement our ability as climbers, but has now gone from being one of the mechanical protagonists to one that is relegated to the background.

Dying Light The Following

In return, now will allow us to drive a buggy that we can customize and enhance (make it more resistant, equipped with traps and weapons, etc.) and it will become your best friend throughout the whole adventure, as it will not only allow us move at full speed on the map, but also will make travel much safer. Otherwise we would have to go on foot without having elevated areas which prevent infected, which usually brings unpleasant consequences.

Driving the buggy is very arcade, but it works pretty well and is surprisingly satisfying . If crushing melee weapon head of the undead and was an experience in the original game, which transmits sensations run at full speed for a full field of zombies as we walked over one after the other are even better.

Moreover, this has allowed Techland introduce a new skill tree that will level as more with our vehicle, which will allow us to unlock new upgrades for it. Also keep in mind that car parts can be strengthened and break, and if we’re going to need repair materials can only be obtained from other vehicles. Obviously, we also have to find fuel to supply our deposit, which we will carefully inspect from every car and truck that we are on the way to obtain all the necessary resources to ensure our survival.

As you can imagine, by introducing vehicles and lead to a map set in a large field, despite what might appear in size, resulting in a scenario of less dense game and less likely to Harran, with points far removed interests each other and with little to do with each other.

These locations are usually things like villages, small structures, bases of bandits and caves, and unfortunately tend to constantly repeat its design, coming to convey a sense of deja vu when we visited yet another house where even the decor of the rooms is exactly the same.

As for the mission design, these again have a strong narrative component that contextualizes and gives meaning to everything we do, something applicable to both related to the main story as secondary. The problem is that these often focus their objectives give us a lot of unnecessary turns, as if that seek to extend the duration of the expansion artificially, something that is particularly evident in the closing stages of the plot (which by the way, it is not no big deal, but knows how to keep the plot well).

Overall, still a lot of fun to play, especially in the company of our friends play because the missions are very pleasant and always manage to arouse our curiosity to find out what we will find upon arrival at the designated point. Of course, I advised that this time has opted for a breakthrough in the structure we have to do side missions to unlock the key. This is because we now have to earn the trust of this mysterious sect before they allow us to continue our goal.

Among other innovations they have included a few new weapons, like the defendant crossbow (perfect to get into camp quietly bandits), a devastating semi-automatic shotgun and a machine gun with which to clean areas of zombies at a time. This additional weapons will be very useful, because in The Following we will find a new type of infected intended to be defeated in cooperative and that you will be very challenging.

Completing The Following take us between 8 and 10 hours, but we want to go for the 100% figure can be easily extended at 12 and 15 hours, not bad when you consider that this is an expansion that costs just 20 euros.

Graphically the game is pretty much the same and just appreciate visual enhancements, keeping intact its many virtues (modeling, lighting, draw distance, effects, textures, etc.) and adding a very important: a good PC optimization. One of our biggest complaints in the analysis that we dedicate to Dying Light was related to the very poor performance that had the game-compatible, which today has completely changed, allowing us to move the program smoothly and all maximum values without any problem in the same configuration we used a year ago to analyze, improvement will also experience the most modest teams.

Finally, the soundtrack properly suits every situation without actually emerge in no time, and sound effects are outstanding.

Conclusions

The Following is a good expansion which gives us just what is expected of them: more hours of the same and with the same quality. Maybe not perfect and suffers from certain problems that prevent you shine more strongly, although it knows how to amuse and make us have a good time without too many complications while providing small but notable developments. If you liked Dying Light and looking for more, few reasons are so that do not continue your adventure, and discover the end of this story, and if you do not yet have dared with the latest Techland, now with the Enhanced Edition you have the perfect opportunity to step into this richly entertaining zombie apocalypse.
